Are you eligible for Medicare?
Medicare is Australia's public health funding system that offers medical and hospital care to eligible Australian residents and citizens.
In most cases, Medicare cover for visitors is limited to immediately necessary or emergency medical treatment. MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover adds to that protection to give you peace of mind about healthcare costs for you and your family while staying in Australia.
If you are from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta, Sweden, Finland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway or the Netherlands, you may have some limited protection from Medicare. The level of protection Medicare gives you depends on which country you come from. To find out if you have access to Medicare and what level of protection you are eligible for, you should call Medicare on 132 011.
How much does it cost?

Important information
When does my cover begin?
- If you are already in Australia, your cover starts 24 hours after payment is received and your application is accepted.
- If your application and payment are made and accepted before you enter Australia, your cover starts from the date you arrive in Australia. You may be required to show proof of your date of arrival, such as an airline boarding pass, before you can claim. Payments and membership are explained in more detail in the MBF Policy Terms & Conditions.
For certain medical conditions, waiting periods apply and you will have to serve the relevant waiting period before your treatment expenses are covered.
Waiting periods
Before you can claim for the cost of treating certain medical conditions, you must be a customer of MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover for a certain length of time, known as a waiting period. There is a 12-month waiting period for obstetrics and two months for other conditions. Treatment for pre-existing aliments, illnesses or conditions are not covered.
However, there is no waiting period for Emergency Ambulance transport, or hospital treatment of injuries caused by an Accident that occur after joining MBF.
Medical Gap Scheme
Each doctor or medical practitioner involved in your hospital treatment can choose to participate in the MBF Medical Gap Scheme. If they choose to take part in the scheme for your treatment, your MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover will cover 100% of their charges up to your overall Limit. If they choose not to participate in the MBF Medical Gap Scheme, some charges may apply. As all doctors and medical practitioners in Australia are independent of any private health insurance, we cannot guarantee a 'no gap' doctor in every area.
Lifetime Health Cover premium loadings
Please note that membership of MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover does not qualify you for Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) purposes, and will not enable you to avoid LHC premium loadings should you join another hospital cover option in the future.
Medicare Levy
MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover does not help you avoid the additional 1% Medicare levy surcharge for high income earners applied by the Federal Government.
Planning to extend your stay or become an Australian resident or citizen?
In general, MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover is designed to cover visitors to Australia - those who are planning to work in Australia for 12 months or more.
If you stay longer, depending on your country of origin, you may become eligible for full Medicare cover. Similarly, if you apply for residency or citizenship of Australia and are accepted, or your circumstances otherwise change, then MBF Corporate Overseas Visitors' Cover may no longer be suitable for you.
You should let MBF know if your circumstances change so we can show you our wide range of alternative health cover options, which we can match to all age, budget and lifestyle needs.
